VI INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE SYMPOSIUM SANTA CRUZ DE LA SIERRA 2019

BACKGROUND

Manzana 1 Espacio de Arte is a non-profit cultural center managed by artists Ejti Stih and Juan Bustillos, who work as volunteers.

It is located on the ground floor of a historical building in downtown Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia

Manzana 1 Espacio de Arte opened its doors 13 years ago and since then it has become the most visited art gallery in the country. An average of 15,424 people visit its facilities, which consist of five halls. It hosts art exhibits displaying the work of national and international artists who work in diverse media: painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, fashion design, installations, etc.

The First Sculptor’s Symposium took place in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia on October 2006. During the event, seen sculptors from Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and Paraguay work in front of a live audience for a week at Manzana 1 Plaza. The event has taken place again every two years since then, up until its fifth edition. As a result of these previous events, 28 finished sculptures are on display at Paseo de las Esculturas, a dedicated public space where the works are exhibited and where people can visit free of charge.

Thus, continuing with the spirit of this event, Manzana 1 Espacio de Arte is currently issuing its call for the VI International Sculpture Symposium.

OBJECTIVES

- Promote interaction between artists and the general population

- Establish an outreach between international sculptors with extensive experience in their field and young Bolivian artists

- Increase the cultural heritage of the city through the creation of new works destined to be on permanent display in a specific public space designed for this purpose

ARTIST’S CALL

After a previous selection process, 10 female sculptors with demonstrated experience in their field will be invited.

Requirements for applying to the event

Each artist interested in participating must send:

- Six (6) photographs of works they have created during the past three years (the resolution of each photograph should be less than 300 kb and in JPG format)

- Specific resumé

The deadline for receiving applications will be Friday April 26, 2019. Once the application has been received, Manzana 1 Espacio de Arte will notify the organizers’ decision to the selected artists up to a month after the application deadline.

CHARACTERISTICS AND CONDITIONS

- Venue 

Manzana Uno Plaza; our square is located next to Manzana 1 Espacio de Arte art gallery, in downtown Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. It is a popular visiting place of the city’s population and it provides the necessary space to work comfortably.

- Work Material 

For the VI International Sculpture Symposium, the sculptures will be made using diverse tropical woods of different sizes and shapes.

- Work Conditions

The organizers:

Promise to provide all participants with the following: - Hotel and food during the week of the event.

- Funds to pay for travel to and from the hotel and the work place. - A fee of u$s1.500.- (One thousand five hundred US Dollars). - Technical assistance.

- One chainsaw.

- Work facilities and services (ej. Tent, electricity, cleaning services).

- Upon the conclusion of the event, every artist selected for the event will receive one trophy.

- The organizers will only cover the expenses of artists who have been formally invited to the Symposium and not their partners, assistants or similar visitors.

Selected artists:

- Our selected artists undertake the commitment of donating the sculpture she creates to the city

- The resulting sculptures must be thought out and designed to be on permanent display in a public space. The organizers will not accept proposals for ephemeral works.

- All participants must have their own medical and accident insurance.

- The selected artists undertake the commitment to bring their own work tools (gouges, etc).

- Participants must know how to handle a chainsaw and all work tools they will use. Assistants will be on call to help create the sculpture, but the selected artists must be the ones who execute the work.

- The selected artists must bring their own work clothes, shoes and protective gear.

- The selected artists must be in Santa Cruz de la Sierra on Thursday 7 of November, 2019, and they undertake the commitment to stay during the entire event, until its conclusion, on Thursday, November 14. The sculptors who remain after this date will be responsible for their own costs.

- The selected artists must undertake the commitment to strictly comply with the rules of the symposium, which will be provided previously via email.

- The selected artists must bring with them a small format work of their own creation to be put on display during a collective exhibit that will take place together with the Symposium. The works will be displayed in the Manzana 1 art gallery.

- Artists who are not selected will be entered into a data base and be considered for participation in future events and/or activities organized by Manzana 1 Espacio de Arte.

INFORMATION

Santa Cruz de la Sierra is the capital city of the department of Santa Cruz, located on the eastern tropical region of Bolivia. It is at 416 meters above sea level. For the past 30 years, it has enjoyed the privilege of being the most important economic center in the country and it has Bolivia’s highest growth rate, as it is the destination of many immigrants from within Bolivia and abroad.

Its climate is humid and tropical. November is its rainy season and its temperatures may sometimes exceed 30ºC, though the weather patterns can unexpectedly change.

The city’s most picturesque attraction is its small historical area, located in downtown Santa Cruz. However, tourists may also enjoy the city’s diverse surrounding natural scenery that ranges from flatlands and forests to desert landscapes.

The city’s population is close to 2, 000,000 people and it enjoys good lodging facilities as well as many bars, restaurants and coffee shops.

RECOMMENDATIONS

- Bring light, comfortable clothes

- It is necessary to be vaccinated against Yellow Fever

- Artists from different continents must go to their own health centers and ask which vaccines they need

- Santa Cruz is not afflicted with malaria, thus it is not necessary to take medicines to prevent this disease. Malaria is a disease found in some rural areas in the northeastern region of Bolivia.
