Open Call: Arctic Art Week 2020

The 17th “Arctic Art Week” International Sculpture Symposium in Finnish Lapland is scheduled for August 6 through August 12 this year. The Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, who has been invested in international cultural exchange since 2003, will be supplying the accommodation and the work space. As of February 2020, over 180 art works have found a home in the resort estate.

The theme of this year’s symposium is “the spirit of the forest”, and the organizer is specifically looking for relief sculptures to be mounted on the outside walls of cabins. Proposal for free standing sculpture is also accepted, but the sculpture should be of steel or concrete for it to be installed outdoor.

Abstract sculpture, figurative sculpture, installation or land art are all welcomed. Participants will work with materials provided by the the organizer, which include pine tree logs (diameter 35-50 cm, length 200-400 cm), timber wood, steel plates, bars and concrete. Any alternative materials may be considered upon request.

The proposal should be designed specifically for the purpose of participating in the Arctic Art Week. It should also take into consideration the weather condition in Finnish Lapland, whose temperature on average dips below -40°C, and the snow accumulation could be expected to reach one meter above ground.

Applications should be sent to hanna.kress@kakslauttanen.fi before 15th of March 2020
