Kakslauttanen – Visual Artist Residence in Finnish Lapland

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is situated 250 km north from the Arctic Circle, close to the town Saariselkä in Finnish Lapland, next to Urho Kekkonen National Park. The Resort is built in the middle of a forest, surrounded by wild nature where the reindeer and other animals of the arctic zone wander. So peace and quiet are guaranteed. The nearest airport is in Ivalo, 40 km from Kakslauttanen. The beautiful Inari lake area is about 80 km away. Inside the Resort there is also an art gallery. The Kakslauttanen Art Gallery has an area of 450 m2 and holds 2-3 changing art exhibitions a year. The gallery also has an interesting sales collection of contemporary Finnish art. Every year in August Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort hosts the “Arctic Art Week”, an international art/sculpture symposium which attracts artists from all around the world to participate. As a result, there are already more than 150 works of art outside in the nature. Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort is member of Res Artis, the worldwide network of artist residencies.

During his/her stay, the resident artist has the possibility to meet artists from the Artists´ Association of Lapland and maybe even indigenous Sami artists living in Lapland. It is also possible to arrange art courses and workshops for professionals and for amateurs at Kakslauttanen. We welcome all forms of activities which involve resident artists and the local community.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort provides a rent-free residence for visual artists from all over the world. The log houses (one for each artist) are situated inside the resort, surrounded by forests and hills. The houses have a living room with kitchen and a bathroom with sauna. The kitchen is fully equipped and also bed linen and towels are provided. The house is free of any cost. Electricity and water are included. There is no separate artists´ studio, so it is preferable to work outside, for example painting, photographing or making sculptures by carving wood. The artists can also use a big tipi-like glass hut for working inside; it has natural light all around, a carpenter´s workshop or other facilities of the Resort. The resident artist is welcome to stay at Kakslauttanen from 1 week up to 2 months in the summer/autumn season (from July to October). The artist is expected to donate one piece of art made during the residency to the Kakslauttanen Art Collection. Any travelling and living expenses must be covered by the artist him/herself. The artist should also bring his own artists´ equipment and material. Those needing financial assistance are asked to turn to the authorities in their own country for help.
