The 2nd Villa de Betancuria International Sculpture Symposium, and ISSA Canary, took place on the island of
Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. This is the westernmost sculpture symposium on world maps published
by China, on the Atlantic Ocean on the western side of the African continent. Olena Dodatko from Ukraine,
Óscar Aguirre Comendador from Cuba and Juan Miguel Cubas from the Canary Islands participated in
the event.
Villa de Betancuria is located in the west-central part of Fuerteventura and was the first capital in the history
of the Canary Islands. Founded in 1404 by the Norman knight Jean de Bethencourt, who chose an inland
valley away from the sea for better defense against pirates, it reached its peak in the 18th century thanks to
its excellent grain harvest. Nowadays, its local economic activities depend on tourism.
